Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? Here are answers to some of the most common things we get asked about turbocharger services.
I think I have a turbocharger problem. What should I do?
Engine issues are often misdiagnosed as turbocharger faults. If you suspect a problem, do not continue driving the vehicle.
Before removing the turbocharger, contact your mechanic for a proper diagnosis. If you notice abnormal noise, check for:
- Exhaust leaks in the turbocharger or exhaust manifold
- Loose nuts and bolts
- Air leaks in the inlet manifold or intercooler hoses
What are the most common causes of turbocharger failure?
Turbochargers rarely fail on their own—underlying engine issues are usually the cause. Common factors include:
- Oil maintenance: Infrequent oil changes can lead to sludge and carbon build-up, causing premature failure.
- Injectors (diesel engines): Faulty or leaking injectors can introduce unburnt fuel into the exhaust system, raising temperatures and damaging the turbocharger.
- Oil drain & engine breathers: Kinked or restricted hoses can cause oil leakage from the turbocharger.
- Oil pressure: Low oil pressure can result in early turbo failure. Oil pressure should always be checked at normal operating temperature.
- Installation: Incorrect installation is a leading cause of turbocharger issues. Professional installation is strongly recommended.
- Non-genuine turbochargers: Inferior aftermarket products may not meet factory specifications, can lead to engine damage, and often fail prematurely. Many are also not repairable due to poor-quality components.
Can I install a turbocharger myself?
Yes, self-installation is possible. However, it is strongly recommended that a qualified, licensed mechanic performs the installation.
Please note that self-installation may void any warranty offered by Precision Turbochargers.
